Racist joke found written underneath one of the world’s most famous paintings

Racist joke found written underneath one of the world's most famous paintings
Kazimir Malevich, ‘Black Square’, 1915 (Picture: Wikicommons)

It turns out one of the world’s greatest artistic masterpieces has a racist joke underneath it.

Disappointingly, art historians discovered a handwritten inscription underneath Kazimir Malevich’s 1915 painting ‘Black Square’.

And it’s really racist.

After looking at the painting under a microscope, experts found that the inscription says: ‘Battle of negroes in a dark cave.’

MORE: Modern art installation removed by cleaners who thought it was party aftermath

‘Black Square’ has long been considered one of the most important artworks of the early 20th century’s avant-garde movement.

Experts reckon the phrase is a reference to another modernist artwork painted in 1897 by a French writer and humourist, Alphonse Allais, called ‘Combat de Nègres dans une cave pendant la nuit – ‘Negroes Fighting in a Cellar at Night’.

The awful attempt at a joke here is that you can’t see black people in dark light, which is why the painting is of a black square.

Turns out it was a pretty well-known joke in Europe at the time. A horribly racist one.

What made Bill Gates so rich?

Bill Gates is worth an astounding $81.6 billion and he keeps getting richer every year.michael-larson

His secret weapon is a man you have probably never heard of: Michael Larson.

Gates hired Larson 20 years ago, when his net worth was a relatively paltry $5 billion, report Anupreeta Das and Craig Karmin at the Wall Street Journal, who just wrote a profile on the notoriously secretive Larson.

Larson runs Gates’ personal investment company Cascade Investment LLC, funded solely by Gates.

At one time, Gates’ wealth depended solely on Microsoft. But for years he’s been selling off his Microsoft stake. The common perception is that he’s been using the proceeds from those sales directly for charity. That’s not entirely how it works.

Although Gates makes his own investments in tech, it is Larson, through Cascade, who has taken Gate’s money and diversified it. Gates now has vast holdings in real estate and nontech companies like the Canadian National Railway Co., AutoNation Inc., and Republic Services Inc. It is these vast holdings that help fund the Gates’ donations.

And although Gates has given an astounding $38 billion to his charitable foundation, thanks to Larson, he’s getting richer faster than he can give his money away.

His $81.6 billion is nearly $6 billion more than it was as of March 2014, when he was worth $76 billion, we reported at the time. And $76 billion was $9 billion more than he was worth in March, 2013.

bill gatesREUTERS/Rick WilkingBill Gates.

In February, Gates celebrated 20 years of this partnership by throwing a gala to honor Larson at his Seattle mansion, reports the WSJ. It was a rare occasion where the two men socialized with each other. Apparently, they aren’t buddies and don’t hang out much, sources told the Journal.

At the party, Gates told guests he has “complete trust and faith” in Larson, meaning that Larson invests Gates’ money, buying and selling, with complete autonomy.

And he does it all under a cover of such ferocious secrecy that he’s been nicknamed “the Gateskeeper.”

Although publicly traded companies do reveal when Cascade has invested heavily in them, Larson has all sorts of tricks for keeping Cascade’s and Bill Gates’ name out of other investments, sources told the Journal.

For instance, he makes employees sign confidentiality agreements which cover them even after they leave. He farms out more than $10 billion to up to 25 outside money managers. This helps him find new investment ideas, but it also helps cover the trail. When Cascade was part of an investment group that bought the Ritz-Carlton hotel in San Francisco, the publicist didn’t even know Cascade, and Bill Gates, was among them.

He’s also been known to fire up a limited liability corporation to make real estate purchases, to keep Cascade’s name off the deal and the deed.

He’s so good at hiding the trail that most people don’t know that Gates, through Cascade, owns a significant stake in the Four Seasons luxury-hotel chain.

And he’s frugal with the bosses’ money, too. Apparently, Cascade employees, of whom there are about 100, are not allowed to stay at the Four Seasons when traveling on business, even if that business is on behalf of the Four Seasons.  They must choose a lower-cost, less luxurious hotel.

“Melinda and I are free to pursue our vision of a healthier and better-educated world because of what Michael has done,” Gates told guests at the party.

And ultimately, the money will go to charity. Bill and Melinda Gates have vowed to donate 95% of their wealth to their foundation, as part of Gates’ giving pledge.

But until then, Larson is making it grow.

The Latest ‘X Factor’ Ratings News Is Pretty Embarrassing

Things are going from bad to worse for ‘X Factor’, and newly-released figures reveal that not only did the show lose out to ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ at the weekend, but it was also beaten in the ratings by ‘Countryfile’. Ouch.

On Sunday night, the average audience figure for ‘X Factor’ was 6.12 million, while 7.05 million saw Matt Baker learning more about the start of the mussel fishing season.

x factor judgs

Our thoughts exactly.

‘Strictly Come Dancing’ topped them both though, averaging at 8.66 million viewers.

The news comes as Simon Cowell admitted that the live judges’ houses format probably wasn’t the best idea, telling Digital Spy: “It was hell. For the first time, I know what it feels like to be a contestant. At that stage listening to people boo you…”

Well, safe to say that idea won’t be wheeled back out again next year, then.

WINNERS!

It was a tough weekend for the ITV show, which suffered a heavy defeat in Saturday’s rating battle, as over three million more TV fans watched their BBC rival.

Bosses will be hoping that the figures improve this weekend when the live shows kick off, choosing ‘X Factor’ over the ‘Strictly’ Halloween special.

‘Top Gear’ Script Editor Richard Porter Admits ‘Jeremy Let Us Down With Half-Hearted, Feeble Apology’

One of ‘Top Gear‘s most senior producers has revealed that Jeremy Clarkson was his longtime hero, but he felt sorely let down by the actions of the show’s star that led to the end of one of the BBC’s most successful programme.

Richard Porter, who worked as script editor for 13 years on the show, told BBC Radio 5 Live that, when Clarkson came to the production office to apologise for the punching incident that led to his exit, the presenter didn’t stay long enough to sit down or take his coat off.

top gear

Richard Porter reveals that the Top Gear were, for once, completely innocent of mischief-making in Argentina

Richard told radio host Phil Williams: “He came in, I don’t know whether he was embarrassed, having to come in straight from BBC management, admitting he’d made a terrible mistake, and then coming in to see the gang.

“It just felt like he wanted to get it over and done with, he didn’t sit down or take his coat off. I think he was quite haunted and hurt by what had happened himself. He wanted to stay at home and lick his wounds. I didn’t want him on the ground kneeling and weeping, but there is a middle ground.”

Richard has written a book about his time on the show, which became increasingly turbulent as Clarkson’s debacles threatened to overshadow the car format that made the show so successful. He reflects in the book on Clarkson’s altercation with producer Oisin Tymon:

“It was stupid and unnecessary. We were a tight team. Whatever else is going on, you don’t turn on one of your own. Jeremy had let us down. When the reward is a smack in the chops, that suggests a lack of respect. His apology seemed half-hearted and feeble.”

top gear

Jeremy Clarkson gave what felt like a “half-hearted and feeble apology” to the Top Gear team

Richard also shed some light on the team’s disastrous foray to Argentina, which saw ‘Top Gear’ run out of town by a crowd of raging locals earlier in the year.

Despite the team’s protestations, few really believed that the cause of the controversy – the licence plates on Jeremy Clarkson’s car which read ‘1982 FKL’ – was anything other than a deliberate slur, a reference to the UK’s conflict with Argentina back in 1982, when we went to war over the Falkland Islands.

However, now Richard has sworn the licence plates were a completely unplanned accident, brought about by the purchase in the UK of the only suitable car, and it being shipped to Argentina before any of the ‘Top Gear’ crew had seen the car to check it out.

“Hand on heart, I can’t say this enough, it wasn’t deliberate. The original concept was to build a small town at the most southerly settlement, and the car bit came belatedly, because there was no obvious car.”

Once the team had settled on V8 engines, Richard reports Clarkson choosing a Porsche 928 GT. He explains a researcher found it online, and an engineer went to check on the car. The team wired the money to the seller, and the car was shipped across the Atlantic without the producers having set eyes on it.

top gear

The car licence plates that caused all the problems were entirely coincidental, confirms Richard Porter

“When we saw the ad, the plates had been blanked out,” says Richard now. “The first time we saw them was in South America, which was when they were spotted by a South American website, who published the pictures.

“We were back in London, and we thought ‘Oh no.’”

During his chat, Richard emphasised how much Jeremy Clarkson contributed to the show, saying he spent many sleepless nights worrying about how to improve the tiniest details of the show.

“I would say that yes, the pressures of the previous year were on Jeremy’s shoulders. He was the engine room of the show.

He was across every small part of the show. He used to lie awake at night worrying about tiny details. He’d be fretting over the minutest thing that he thought should be better, and he put the most pressure on himself.”

Jeremy Clarkson and his former co-presenters Richard Hammond and James May are now set to launch a new car show on Amazon Prime, while the ‘Top Gear’ format is being revamped by the BBC with Chris Evans in the driving seat.

Four extraterrestrial signals that experts cannot explain

The possible existence of extraterrestrial life and, even more, the eventual contact with it, has been the subject of speculation, anger and anxiety for humanity in modern times. Meanwhile, from outer space, science has registered multiple signals, hitherto inexplicable for experts. These signals have led to numerous theories and speculations.

The Signals from the Perseus Cluster. In June 2014, , the Chandra X-ray observatory from NASA, and the XMM-Newton observatory of the European Space Agency, recorded a clearly intelligent signal originating from the Perseus cluster, a group of galaxies located about 240 million light years away from Earth.

The Black sound. As a result from the data obtained from the study of a black hole which is located in the Star system referred to as GRS 1915 +105, a researcher from the MIT, Edward Morgan was able to recreate one of the most mysterious sounds ever registered by humans. The replicated model is the biggest black hole in the Milky Way, exceeding the mass of the Sun by approximately 18 times. This mysterious black hole emits a B flat sound at a frequency 1 million times deeper than anything perceived by the human ear.

Perseus-Cluster-630x354

Space Explosion. Between 2011 and 1012, the Parkes radio telescope located in New South Wales, Australia performed routine space sweeps and ran into FOUR mysterious bursts of radio signals. Each of those bursts lasted only a couple of milliseconds but their energy was extremely powerful. While researchers speculate that these radio bursts might come from the depths of the Milky Way, there are other scientists who believe that they originated from elsewhere, in a galaxy further away from us. Scientists have no idea what caused these bursts and why they are so powerful.

Wow_signal

The Wow! Signal. On August the 15th 1977, exactly at 10:16 p.m. EST, the Big Ear radio telescope in Ohio, USA detected a signal of unknown origin. This mysterious signal lasted for 72 seconds with an intensity 30 times higher than that of the “white noise” or background noise of the Universe. Astronomers decided to call it the Wow! signal because it was the only thing that Professor Jerry Ehman, who was then monitoring the computers, managed to write down on paper at the time the signal was recorded. The circled alphanumeric code “6EQUJ5” describes the intensity variation of the signal. The signal bore the expected hallmarks of non-terrestrial and non-Solar System origin. Up until today, this signal remains one of the most mysterious ever received. many believe that the Wow! signal originated from an extraterrestrial civilization in our galactic neighborhood, in the constellation Sagittarius, near the Chi Sagittarii star group.Several attempts were made by Ehman as well as by other astronomers to detect and identify the signal again. The signal was expected to appear three minutes apart in each of the horns, but that did not happen.

NBA’S GLEN RICE JR. SHOT IN LEG In Gunfight At T.I.’s Restaurant

1026_glen-rice-jr_getty

The man who was shot in the leg at T.I.‘s Atlanta restaurant is former NBA player Glen Rice Jr. — son of Glen Rice.

We broke the story … a fight broke out at Scales 925 on Sunday night … after a verbal argument inside the eatery spilled out into the parking lot.

During the incident, shots were fired … and Rice was shot in the leg.

Cops say they have footage showing Rice running from the scene of the crime and ditching a gun by throwing it on a stairwell.

Rice was shown on footage getting into a Porsche and leaving the scene.

Police responded and pulled over the Porsche and found Rice Jr. bleeding from the leg — while in possession of 240 grams of marijuana and $6,000 in cash.

He’s been charged with reckless conduct and possession of weed.

Rice Jr. was a 2nd round pick in the 2013 NBA Draft … and was waived by the Washington Wizards back in January. We’re told Rice Jr. was exploring options to play overseas.

BTW, cops say the man who picked up Rice Jr. in the Porsche is Steven Pryor … who was connected to Rice in a 2012 incident involving a gun.

According to reports, Rice was leaving Halo Lounge near the Georgia Tech campus in 2012 in a Cadillac Escalade when cops responded to shots fired.

When cops pulled over the Caddy, Pryor was a passenger in the car and admitted to firing a shot from a 9mm pistol but insisted it was an accident.

Pryor was arrested and charged with discharge of a firearm while under the influence.

Rice was also charged with a crime from the incident — permitting unlawful operation of a vehicle. He was kicked off the Georgia Tech basketball team as a result.

Welcome To Zaqistan: Robot Guards New Nation

A New York man is attempting to build his own sovereign nation in a remote four-acre patch of Utah.

Zaq Landsberg has created the Republic of Zaqistan in Box Elder County after buying the land on eBay for $610.

The fledgling nation includes its own yellow and red flag, official-looking passports and a border patrol gate guarded by a giant robot sentry, KSL-TV reported.

Zaqistan has its own yellow and red flag. Pic: Mike DeBernardo/KSL-TV

At one stage – for three weeks – it even held its first embassy in Buenos Aires, Argentina, hosted inside a contemporary art museum.

Mr Landsberg, who is President of Zaqistan, said he was amazed at how remote the area was after buying the brush-covered stretch of desert in 2005.

He told KSL-TV: “The conceptual goal is I want it to become a real country.

“I mean, that goal is not going to happen. It’s impossible, but going through the motions, (I’m) trying to make that happen.”

Visitors to Zaqistan, which is 60 miles from the nearest town, 15 miles from any paved road and a two-mile hike from the nearest dirt road, can purchase official passports costing $40, which will even be stamped as you leave the area.

Mr Landsberg pays property taxes to Box Elder County, which he refers to as tributes, and says his art project is aimed at seeing how far he can push the boundaries of land ownership and sovereignty.

He told the TV station: “My goal is to, like, probe those little areas. To try and find what that does mean.

“Zaqistan works the best, I think, when it’s wedged up against the real world, and when the passports circulate.

“Out here, it’s not that crazy of an idea to have your own little spot, and to do your own thing and to have your own space and the privacy to do that.”

Zaqistan lists water as its main import and has an unofficial motto which reads: “Something from nothing”.

Darth Vader supporter Chewbacca arrested in Ukraine

Policemen detain a person dressed as Star Wars character Chewbacca during a regional election near a polling station in Odessa, Ukraine,

It’s a sentence we never thought we’d write, but here goes: Chewbacca has been arrested in Ukraine after police say they caught him campaigning for Darth Vader.

A candidate, using the identity of the Star Wars Sith Lord has been running in local elections in the city of Odessa.

It’s claimed the man dressed as Chewbacca had broken election day rules by campaigning on voting day.

It’s being reported Chewbacca was fined the equivalent of a fiver.

He’d arrived at a polling station along with the candidate when police stepped in.

It’s not.

Darth Vader at a polling booth

Image caption Mr Vader at a polling station in Odessa

In fact if, like us, you follow every tiny detail of Ukrainian local politics you’ll know this isn’t the first time.

Chewbacca himself, along with Padme Amidala and Yoda, have all appeared on ballot papers.

It’s thanks to the Internet Party of Ukraine who, for a few years, having been injecting a lighter side to Ukraine’s tense political situation.

In the past Darth Vader’s been seen being driven through the country’s capital Kiev with stormtroopers by his side. Obviously.

He’s also been known to blast the film’s Imperial March through loud speakers.

But whoever he (she?) is, he has a serious side. In addition to pledging to build a “galactic empire” he’s also demanding more transparency in Ukrainian politics.

Darth Vader has even been given his own statue in Odessa.

The reworked statue of Darth Vader

The statue on this plinth used to be of Vladimir Lenin, the founder of the Soviet Union, who has remain a controversial figure among Ukrainians.

Lenin’s statue was removed under laws banning references to Ukraine’s communist past.

The sculptor Oleksandr Milov told the AFP news agency the Darth Vader movement “has been at the centre of Ukrainians’ attention for many years”.

“There are plans to build a Wi-Fi router into the statue’s head so he can communicate with the other Siths,” he added.

Of course, you might think it’s odd Darth Vader was hoping to be elected mayor of Odessa.=Whether it’s a mayoral election or a parliamentary race it’s not clear if the same person is behind the mask each time Darth appears.

Man Utd Star Sues Over Look-A-Like Nazi Doll

A Chinese toy manufacturer is being sued by Germany’s football captain after it produced a look-a-like doll dressed in a Nazi uniform.

Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger began legal proceedings after the figure named ‘Bastian’ appeared on sale through Hong Kong based Dragon in Dreams (DID).

The company also sells figures depicting former Soviet Union leader Joseph Stalin, British war leader Winston Churchill and civil-rights activist Martin Luther King.

Is it or isn’t it? The doll said to resemble Schweinsteiger

A spokesman for the 31-year-old, who won the World Cup with Germany in 2014, told reporters he was taking legal action as German media angrily reacted at what they perceived to be a depiction of the player as a Nazi.

“Filth,” said Munich’s TZ newspaper while Stern magazine said “Scandal doll Bastian. That is what it looks like,” next to a picture of the doll.

The resemblance to Germany captain Schweinsteiger is striking, although a spokesman for the company has insisted that it is purely coincidental.

“We think that all Germans look like that. Bastian is also a very common name in Germany,” spokesman Patrick Chan told Bild.

The doll is available with different uniforms and kits

Media lawyer Ulrich Amelung told Bild that the doll was “a clear violation of Schweinsteiger’s personality rights” and “constituted a gross defamation and insult”.

However users on the action figure community website One Sixth Warriors appeared to react more positively to the doll.

User Mailalan said: “I like everything about this one. This one has lots of nicely done small details. I really like it. I agree that it is Bastian Schweinsteiger, the nose gives it away.”

Schweinsteiger is among the most successful German footballers of his generation, having won the Champions League with Bayern Munich in 2013 as well as numerous domestic league and German Cup titles before joining Manchester United in the summer.

Church Emerges From Water During Drought

The ruins of a 16th century colonial church in Mexico have emerged from beneath the surface of a reservoir during a drought.

A lack of rain in the southern state of Chiapas has seen levels in the man-made lake drop by 75ft (25m), revealing the remains of the building dating from the mid-1500s.

The church was submerged in 1966 following the completion of the dam.

It is the second time the church has been revealed by receding waters.

In 2002 the level fell so low people could actually walk inside the building.

Fisherman Leonel Mendoza recalled: “The people celebrated.

“They came to eat, to hang out, to do business. I sold them fried fish. They did processions around the church.”

The church, built by monks headed by Friar Bartolome de la Casas, was linked to the nearby monastery of Tecpatan, founded in 1564.

It was located on the King’s Highway, a road designed by Spanish conquistadors which was still in use until the 20th century.

Measuring 183ft in length, 42ft wide and with walls 30ft high, the bell tower rises to 48ft above the ground.

Archaeologist Carlos Navarrete said: “Most probably the church was abandoned due to the big plagues of 1773-1776. It was a catastrophe.”

A previous dig revealed a mass burial site with the remains of plague victims.

‘London In Peril’ From Drug Gang Turf Wars

London gangs with members as young as 12 are in “open warfare” – and the police have “lost control” of the streets.

These are among the damning claims made to Sky News following the shooting of a police officer in Hackney last week.

A recently retired sergeant who ran a gangs unit for the Metropolitan Police says up to 35 criminal outfits are operating in Hackney alone.

You can even find a Google Map that claims to show the areas in east London controlled by rival gangs.

And it is not just Londoners who should be concerned.

Darin Birmingham, who earned 23 commendations during 30 years in the Met, claims gangs are going “unchecked” as they export Class A drugs to UK towns and cities as far away as Aberdeen.

Former Met sergeant Darin Birmingham.

Former gangs unit sergeant Darin Birmingham says police have ‘lost control’

He blames budget cuts, changes to stop and search rules, and the increased focus on terrorism.

“These gangs are in open warfare,” Mr Birmingham told Sky News. “London is in peril and Boris should stand up.

“The Met is losing about 50 good policeman a week. Within 18 months they’re getting rid of the whole chief inspector rank to save money.

“I don’t think there is enough quality in the police anymore and they’ve lost control of these gangs.

“The main thing for them is now radicalisation, people going to Syria. Everything domestic has been forgotten about and these gangs have become stronger.”

Mr Birmingham – whose claims have been refuted by the Met – established Operation Aries in Croydon seven years ago to disrupt gangs who dealt in extortion, organised violence and hard drugs.

His tactic was to put “constant pressure” on gang members by interacting with them daily wherever they congregated – which in Croydon in 2008 meant the local chicken shops.

But the 51-year-old, who retired in 2013, feels recent changes in stop and search guidelines designed to protect the black community have made officers wary of engaging with local crews.

“If you go out and stop 10 people who are gang members and don’t find anything you’re likely to get a mark against your name saying you’ve only stopped people because they’re black.

“A lot of the guys now don’t want to get involved in stopping a BMW with four guys in the car – it’s going to be a load of grief.”

Mr Birmingham describes gangs as “like football teams with senior players and others as young as 12 coming through”.

These children might be persuaded to sell cannabis after school, and before long school itself becomes an extracurricular activity.

It is a path that leads to trading crack cocaine and buying a firearm to protect your business interests.

“The older gang members start to s**t themselves,” says Mr Birmingham.

“They’re not worried about blokes their own age, they’re worried about the young ones, the tinys. To get their rank they have to do something completely mad. They have to draw blood.

“These kids are chaotic. If they see two lads from another gang on the other side of the street they go over and stab them.”

Play video “What Happens On A Police Raid?”

Video: What Happens On A Police Raid?

The gangsters described by the former sergeant are fearless because of their youth and, sometimes, because they arrive in the UK from some of the most brutal parts of the world.

Mr Birmingham remembers arresting a teenager from Rwanda.

“He was 15 or 16 years old and he said he was in a mud hut with his family when the hutus came in, chopped his family to death and he hid under their bodies.

“He said to me, ‘Do you really think I’m worried about being punched in the face in Croydon?'”

The new breed of gangster does little to affect the old order, however, with several long-established gangs retaining broader control of the streets.

“Some of these gangs have been established 20 years,” said Mr Birmingham. “You’ve got the Tottenham Mandem, the Star Gang in Haringey; in Hackney you’ve got London Fields, Haggerston Fields. These are the people who control the smaller gangs.”

In response to Mr Birmingham’s claims, the Met told Sky News that budget cuts – amounting to £600m so far – meant there were “challenges”.

But a statement added that murder, robbery and firearm discharges had fallen.

“Any suggestion that the Met is failing to tackle gang crime is an inaccurate reflection of the work being carried out on a daily basis by officers,” the force said.

On stop and search, there was a recognition that a “balance needed to be reached”.

A Home Office statement said: “This Government is also taking action against gang and youth violence.

“We are already working with 43 local areas facing problems with gangs and youth violence. This work includes supporting a network of over 80 experts with frontline experience of dealing with gangs and drug dealing linked to organised crime.”

Man Dies On Flight After Biting Passenger

A man has died on a flight from Portugal to Ireland after becoming violent and biting a passenger who tried to help restrain him.

The 24-year-old was on an Aer Lingus flight from Lisbon to Dublin, which was forced to divert to Cork Airport.

Medics on board the flight were among those understood to have joined efforts to calm the man, who bit one of those battling to restrain him.

He is believed to have fallen unconscious while the plane was in the air and was pronounced dead at Cork Airport.

Passenger John Leonard said two nurses and a doctor had tried to resuscitate the man after the captain asked if there were any medics on board.

He told Cork’s 96fm: “After that it got worse I would say, his seizure seemed to get worse. He was actually on the ground shaking violently.

“The noise he was making was like something I have never heard before.

“It’s not something you’d hear everyday. It was like deep anguish is the best way I could describe it, very, very troubled.

“Not screaming in a sense you know if you’d hurt yourself or something, just a very guttural, from deep within him.”

A post-mortem examination is due to be carried out and may help establish whether the man suffered a seizure, had an underlying medical condition or whether there were other factors involved in his death.

A Portuguese woman in her forties who had been on the plane was arrested after the discovery of amphetamines and was questioned on suspicion of drugs offences at Togher Garda station in Cork city.

It is not known if she was travelling with the dead man.

There were 168 passengers and six crew members on board flight EI485, which landed safely at 5.40pm on Sunday.

Aer Lingus described the incident as a “medical emergency”.

It is understood that all passengers on the flight were interviewed by police following the landing.

Oscar Pistorius released from prison: latest

Former Olympian Oscar Pistorius has been released from prison in South Africa one day earlier than expected, after serving less than one year behind bars for the killing of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

Oscar Pistorius will be released on house arrest on 20 October 2015, after spending one year in prison for shooting dead his girlfriend. The prison's parole board said the athlete would be released on the condition that he continued psychotherapy and adhered to a ban on his carrying a firearm. Pistorius fired four shots at Reeva Steenkamp through a locked toilet door at his home in Pretoria in the early hours of Valentine's Day 2013. She died at the scene. Oscar Pistorius out of jail and hunkered down at uncle’s house under “mansion arrest”

Oscar Pistorius is currently hunkered down at his uncle Arnold’s house in the leafy Pretoria suburb of Waterkloof, with media camped outside, after being released from prison one day early. He will spend the rest of his five year sentence under house arrest. His family is expected to release a statement on Tuesday. Reeva Steenkamp’s cousin has said the family would be prepared to meet him at the right time but think he has gotten off lightly after spending less than a year in prison for her killing.

01.00

Pistorius’s early release from prison has been criticised by women’s groups in South Africa. The ANC Women’s League said they were “disappointed” by the decision.

“We pin our hopes on the SCA to repeal the judgment and that Oscar must serve a sentence that would bring him back a changed man and an advocate for women’s rights in future,” it said in a statement.

00.25

In the days after Reeva Steenkamp’s killing, Gareth A Davis wrote this indepth profile of Oscar Pistorius, which is worth revisiting today.

00.10

Reeva Steenkamp’s cousin Kim Martin has told the BBC that the family might consider meeting Pistorius when the time is right but believe he is “getting off lightly” for the killing.

00.01

Why was he released early?

It seems the prisons department wanted to sidestep a media scrum. This from AP:

The correctional services department had originally said Pistorius would be released from the Pretoria jail on Tuesday in line with a decision by a parole board at the prison.

“The handling of the actual placement is an operational matter of the local management, and how they handle it is their prerogative that is carried out in the best interest of all parties concerned, the victims, the offender and the Department of Correction Services,” Manelisi Wolela, a spokesman for South Africa’s correctional services department, said.

Oscar ‘hunkered down’

Pistorius family spokesman Anneliese Burgess said that he was at his uncle Arnold’s house in Pretoria, adding that the family was “hunkered down”.

She said that the family would issue a statement later Tuesday.

23.42

The media have started to gather outside Oscar Pistorius’s uncle’s home, where he is serving the rest of his sentence under house arrest.

Pistorius might be out of prison but the case isn’t over. He faces a further test at the Supreme Court on November 3 when prosecutors will appeal for a murder conviction and a tougher sentence that could see him jailed for at least 15 years.

23.36

News of his release, and the manner in which Pistorius will be serving the rest of his sentence have not gone down well on Twitter.

It’s official:

AP reports – “Oscar Pistorius was placed under correctional supervision tonight,” correctional services department spokesman Manelisi Wolela said in a statement.

“The handling of the actual placement is an operational matter of the local management, and how they handle it is their prerogative that is carried out in the best interest of all parties concerned, the victims, the offender and the Department of Correctional Services.”

23.20

As Aislinn Laing in Johannesburg wrote earlier today that Pistorius could seek to meet the family of Reeva Steenkamp following his release:

Michael Masutha, South Africa’s justice minister, suggested it would be an important part of his rehabilitation and their healing process, even if his victims’ relatives were reluctant.

“I can tell you everybody else can try and comfort you, but it is especially the person who is the source of your pain, who making peace with is likely to bring the greatest healing,” he told ENCA.

23.10

Gillian Parker has the details on Pistorius’s uncle’s house, in Waterkloof, an upmarket Pretoria suburb, where he will serve out his sentence:

In a leafy suburb outside South Africa’s capital Pretoria is a three-storey mansion, boasting sweeping verandas, landscaped grounds and a swimming pool.

Oscar Pistorius released

Well, that was unexpected. Oscar Pistorius has been released from prison one day early, catching the world’s media by surprise.

Here’s what we know so far:

Oscar Pistorius has been released from prison, one day earlier than expected, after serving less than one year behind bars for the killing of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

The former Olympian will serve the rest of his five year sentence under house arrest at his uncle’s home in Pretoria.

Pistorius’ lawyer Brian Webber confirmed the athlete’s release to NBC.

Pistorius was convicted of killing Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day 2013 by shooting her through the closed door of a toilet in the home they shared.

Have you seen this, its a video called DEAR FAT PEOPLE!

Check out some reactions by clicking here.

Despite complaints about her controversial ‘fat-shaming’ rant

Nicole Arbour isn’t apologizing for a controversial video she posted on Sept. 3 called “Dear Fat People”—in fact, she feels proud she’s started a conversation about weight, body image and what it means to be a female comedian.

The controversial “fat-shaming” message in the video—which has racked up nearly three million views and spread rapidly on social media—drew swift reactions from YouTube starscomedians and columnists, who slammed Arbour for apparently mocking those who weigh more than she does.

But in an interview, Arbour, who has 159,000 YouTube subscribers, maintained that the video is satire and anyone who doesn’t realize that is missing the point.

“I feel it’s really important that we make fun of everybody,” she told TIME. “I think [what] brings us together and unites us as people is that we can poke fun at all of us.”

Much of the criticism of Arbour has focused on her lack of subtlety in discussing fat-shaming, obesity and health. In the video, she says people are entirely responsible—or, as her tone implies, to blame—for their own weight. Among Arbour’s lines that drew particular attention:

“I don’t feel bad for you because you are taking your body for granted… What are you going to do, fat people? What are you going to do? You going to chase me? I can get away from you by walking at a reasonable pace.”

Arbour doesn’t see her comments as bullying, but rather an intense form of truth-telling. She said she hopes the video convinces people to exercise and eat healthier, and she bristled at the idea that people had found her words offensive.

“I find seeing someone’s head being blown off offensive,” she said. “I find children starving in a country with more than enough food offensive. I find women’s bodies being mutilated for religious purposes, that is offensive to me. But words and satire I don’t find offensive.”

Arbour said her comments were partly inspired by other comedians who have touched on weight issues, like Tina Fey, Ricky Gervais, Mindy Kaling and Sarah Silverman. One difference, though, is that these comedians tend to make fun of themselves—like Tina Fey and Amy Poehler at the Golden Globes in 2013—rather than treating fat people in general as a humorous topic.

Florida is home to the 1,000th U.S mass shooting, quite a scary thought, do you think there should be more gun control in the U.S?

Florida: home to the 1,000th US mass shooting since Sandy Hook

Just before sundown on Thursday 1 October, an old man charged across the main street of the little town of Inglis, Florida. He was expecting trouble. Someone had recklessly fired a pistol in public, and Buzz Terhune intended to have words about it.

The horror that unfolded in the next few minutes has become so mundane, so everyday, that it no longer makes national news. Terhune was marching headlong into the 1,000th mass shooting in the United States since the Sandy Hook elementary school massacre almost three years ago.

Just a few hours earlier, a gunman in Oregon had killed nine people and injured nine others at a community college. It shocked the American conscience. But what happened to Terhune and three other people, and has happened to thousands of others across the country, went unnoticed. Shootings that injure or kill four or more people – mass shootings – have become commonplace in American culture.

An examination of the details, though, reveals the mass shooting number 1,000 to be, like all the others, a human cataclysm. Broken hearts and bullets, an affair in which the roles of victim and perpetrator flip in an instant.

It started a few days earlier, when sheriff’s deputies responded to a missing person report. Walter Tyson, 57, couldn’t find his wife, Patricia. But when deputies arrived at the house, they found notes Patricia had left saying she wanted a new life. And so she had left.

Days passed.

Inglis sits on Florida’s west coast, in a swamp draped with Spanish moss. The town has been dying since the day, decades ago, when commercial net fishing was outlawed. Its population has dwindled to 1,300, and most residents are getting old.

Most of 1 October, 68-year-old Buzz Terhune ran errands in the tiny downtown. He stopped by city hall to leave a get-well card and balloons for the mayor, Drinda Merritt, who had been ill. The two had a friendly, sparring relationship: Terhune showed up at every city meeting, always sat in the same chair, and always spoke his mind.

“I’m not done with you yet!” he wrote in the card, and drew a little smiley face.

City hall’s main hallway was stacked with old wooden doors. The mayor had replaced them with doors of reinforced glass, and added a thick glass barrier at the front desk, after a man who lived across from city hall started stalking one of the women who worked there. Otis Ray Bean was his name.

“We knew we could have trouble when he moved to town,” the mayor said.

People in town didn’t like Bean. He wore a black leather vest and drank too much. His home looked like a southern gothic haunted house, with rotting clapboard sides and a rusted roof and strange stick-and-feather talismans hanging outside. It sat directly across from city hall and the town bank, looming over the comings and goings of Inglis.

Scotty Smith

Just before 6pm on 1 October, Terhune and his friend Scotty Smith pulled up to the bank’s cash machine, in Smith’s truck. Terhune sat in the passenger’s seat. The truck sat too high for Smith to reach the machine, so he stepped out. As he keyed in a $100 withdrawal he heard Terhune, behind him in the cab, say something about a fire.
Smith looked at the sky.

“Nah, Buzz,” he said. “That’s just some mist coming in. Not smoke.”

He heard Terhune say, “ … firing a gun”, and saw him jump out of the truck and take off running.

“Where are you going?” Smith shouted.

Terhune called back, “The kids!” and pointed to a playground next to city hall. He apparently suspected Bean was drunkenly firing off his pistol in sight of the children, whose mother was scrambling to gather them.

Smith hadn’t heard the gunshots, and still didn’t quite grasp what was happening. “What has Buzz got us into now?” he thought.

He danced around the cash machine until it spit out his money, then hopped into his truck and pulled away, toward the Bean place.

Terhune, who served three tours in Vietnam, crossed the street to confront Bean.

Bean, though, lay dying in his yard. He wasn’t the shooter.

A man Terhune didn’t recognize stood on the steps of the side porch, with one pistol in his hand and another on his waist. Walter Tyson had bought them years earlier in New York state, where he had a concealed-carry permit.

Kendra Terhune

In the bank parking lot, Smith looked through the windshield of his truck. He saw Bean lying in the yard and, a few feet away, Terhune now lying still in the grass. He heard four more gunshots, from the first floor of the house. Tyson had found his wife.

Smith pulled his truck past the house and on to the side of the road. He dialed 911, and an operator told him to stay clear of the scene. But he backed his truck up to the house and watched his friend Terhune, hoping for movement. Praying for a twitch.

“If he had moved, I was going to pull the truck up and throw him in it and take off,” Smith said later. “Like on TV, you know? But it didn’t happen like that.”

Tyson had shot Terhune twice in the head, and he never moved again.

Inglis has no police department. But according to Lieutenant Scott Tummond of the Levy County sheriff’s office, the town had a single stroke of luck that day.

A couple of blocks away, a tactical joint taskforce of US marshals, state police and sheriff’s deputies had just arrested a fugitive on unrelated interstate charges. When Smith called 911, the enormous taskforce responded within moments, arriving at Bean’s yard like a cavalry division.

“I have no doubt things would have carried on, and been worse, if they hadn’t been there,” Tummond said. “I believe Tyson would have fled the scene and it would have spilled into another town.”

Seeing the house surrounded, Tyson climbed to the second floor. He called his daughter, Jennifer Conklin, and told her what he had done. She begged him to surrender.

“I’m sorry,” he told her. “Goodbye.”

And he shot himself.

The town had never known violence like it. And yet it seemed familiar, and even inevitable. At a memorial service for Terhune, pastor Bobby Thompson addressed much of the town.

“So profuse has become the violence that we have become accustomed to it,” he said. “We expect it.”

The reaction of many citizens is, now, to reach more quickly for their own guns.

Mayor Merritt is a petite, middle-aged woman. “If I had been there that day, the difference is I would have stopped at my car for my gun,” she said. “Then I would have crossed the street. And I would have dropped the shooter.”

After Scotty Smith called for police, he went home and picked up his own pistol.

“Maybe I’m just paranoid,” he said.

His hands shook as he talked about what he had seen.

“I felt like I needed it. It’s crazy. People will shoot you for anything, these days.”

Man Fired From Work For Farting Too Much (Read the Lawsuit)

Richard Clem is in a stinky situation: His wife filed a lawsuit last month against their former employer who allegedly fired him for farting too much.

The 70-year-old man and his wife, Louann, both worked at Case Pork Roll Company of Trenton, New Jersey. He was fired in February, 2014, for his supposed flatulence, according to court documents.

Louann Clem claims in a court filing that her husband’s termination was a violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Richard Clem supports the lawsuit and is taking legal action on his own through the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

“When the suit was filed, I didn’t know it would go viral,” Clem told The Huffington Post. “I was very surprised.”

Richard Clem started working at Case Pork Roll in 2004 as a comptroller and believes he did a good job.

“I brought them into the 21st century,” he said proudly.

At the time of his hire, Clem weighed about 420 pounds, but underwent gastric bypass surgery in October 2010, to get rid of his own porky belly.

Clem lost about 120 pounds before gaining back 10. He’s also suffered some embarrassing side effects, including “extreme gas and uncontrollable diarrhea.”

In 2013, Clem’s symptoms worsened, which caused “significant disruption in the workplace,” according to the suit.

Louann Clem, who began her job at Case Pork Roll in 2008, said company president Thomas Dolan repeatedly griped about her husband’s gassy problem.

The suit alleges Dolan made Richard Clem work at home and said things like, “We cannot run an office and have visitors with the odor in the office,” and “Tell Rich we are having complaints from people who have problems with the odors.”

Richard Clem was fired from Case Pork Roll on February 28, 2014,  Louann Clem quit the same day “because of the harassment and discrimination her husband faced as a result of his disability and the resulting symptoms,” according to NJ1015.com.

The Clems’ lawyer, David Koller, said his client’s gastrointestinal disorders may be getting headlines, but aren’t the key part of the case.

“Flatulence and farting is the sexy part of the story, but my client suffers from obesity, which is covered by the Americans with Disabilities Act,” Koller told The Huffington Post.

Louann Clem is seeking damages from Case Pork Roll that include pain and suffering, compensatory damages and punitive damages.

Richard Clem also wants company employees to go through training programs that will prevent future incidents from occurring.

“I’m speaking up for people who are overweight,” he said. “Does being obese mean you can’t do a good job? Of course not!”

READ THE LAWSUIT:

But the lawsuit may not pass the smell test according to Mark Davis, a criminal defense attorney in Pasadena, California.

“I don’t know if his employers could help with reasonable accomodations because he’s making it uncomfortable for other employees,” Davis told HuffPost.

“Plus, his explosive bouts of diarrhea make it hard for him to do his job.”

Infinity War ending will ‘change the Avengers forever’

<Mild spoilers ahoy> The ending of Avengers: Age of Ultron saw the advent of some major changes for the titular super-team, and from the sounds of things, the shake-up won’t end there. Indeed, according to Marvel Studios exec Jeremy Latcham, the ending of Infinity War will see the end of the team as we know it…

“I think it definitely is an end to some version of the team that we’ve come to know as The Avengers,” Latcham told Collider. “Who knows exactly what is going to happen yet in that film, but I think this version of that team – and I think we start to hint at it at the end of Age Of Ultron – will be evolving.”

“One of the things we love from the comics is that the roster is always changing and new people are coming onto the team,” continues Latcham. “You can pick up an Avengers book ten years later and you don’t recognise the people on the cover. But the ideas and ideals and things that make the Avengers the Avengers still exist, and I think that’s part of what this culmination will be.”

“We’re seeing this version of the team doing this thing to save the universe, the galaxy, however you want to put it, and we’ll kind of see where that goes. It’s not the end of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but I think that it is the end of part of it for sure. We’re still trying to sort out that point.” Change is coming. We’ll see how it pans out whenAvengers: Infinity War – Part 1 opens in the UK on April 27 and the US on May 4, 2018.

Woman Accidentally Sends Dirty Snapchat to Boss, Check Out This Legendary Reply!

Untitled-11

Sending nudey-dudey pictures on snapchat is risky business these days, what with people being able to replay pictures and save them secretly and all. But this poor woman fell victim to the ‘I-accidentally-clicked-the-wrong-name’ error that we all know too well.

That was how her boob ended up on the screen of her boss, instead of her boo-thang. Why exactly she has her boss on snapchat is another question entirely.

The casual boob snap was complete with a cheeky message that we’re sure she spent a bit of time pondering over – snapchats are a work of art, you know.

Untitled-10

Her boss’ response to her boob was pretty simple, and he wasn’t too mad:

Yikes. We wouldn’t liked to have been in the office the Monday morning after that snapchat conversation…

An air hostess has since been sacked by her (unnamed) employers when it came out that she was earning £650,000 a year by having it off with her passengers in the on-board toilets.

The matter came to light after she was caught in the act in the toilets. She was immediately sacked which is, you know, hardly surprising…

It is claimed that she preferred long haul flights between the Gulf and the USA for obvious reasons and she was charging up to £1,500 per… favour.

A source speaking to the Arabic language newspaper Daily Sada said:

“She admitted that she had sex with many other passengers during flight and that she preferred long distance flights between the Gulf and the United States.”

Although the airline has not been named, the general consensus is that it was a middle-eastern firm. Definitely not Virgin… get it?!

So there you have it. It’s easier to join the mile-high club than you might have thought. All you need to do is get the particular hostess rehired and then save up £1,500. Easy.

Girl strips naked in shopping centre after boyfriend refuses to buy her iPhone 6s

People are usually desperate to get their hands on the latest Apple product.

But it could be argued that this woman has gone to extreme lengths in an attempt to secure herself an iPhone 6s .

After reportedly failing to persuade her boyfriend to buy her the latest gadget, the woman, who was caught on camera in a shopping centre in China, decided she had only one option.

Girl strips naked after her boyfriend refuses to buy her the iPhone 6s
Angry: The girl took off all her clothes after her boyfriend ‘refused to buy her the latest gadget’

And that option was to strip completely naked in front of hundreds of other shoppers.

In the clip, the woman can be seen exchanging words with her partner before tearing her clothes off and throwing them onto the floor.

Unashamed: The girl tears off her clothes after the argument

Her unimpressed boyfriend walks away, but she soon follows, pushing him several times.

It is not clear how the argument ended – or whether the woman ever ended up getting her hands on the iPhone 6s.

Top 25 Highest Earning Youtube Stars

Here’s how it works: Have you ever tried to watch a video on Youtube but before it plays you need to watch a commercial? That’s called a pre-roll. Every 1000 times a pre-roll advertisement is shown, Youtube gets paid some amount of money. The amount can vary but typically Youtube is paid between $20 and $25 for every thousand ad views. This is called a CPM. This is exactly how CelebrityNetWorth makes money as well, except our CPMs are nowhere near $25, because we think pre-roll commercials are really annoying.

When a Youtube channel has enough followers, the owner of the account can apply to become a member of their Partner Program. Youtube Partners earn a cut of the CPM earned off the videos in their channel. Youtube takes 45% of whatever the partner channel earns. The CPM price can vary quite a bit, but typically a Youtube Partner ends up earning a roughly $5-7 CPM. That means, for every 1000 times an advertisement is shown on their channel, the Partner could earn $7 (and Youtube would take the remaining ($18). Sometimes they earn way more, sometimes way less. Assuming a Partner’s video has one million views and every single viewer watched a pre-roll advertisement, the Partner would earn $7000 (1 million divided by 1000 * $7). That’s a very rough example. In reality, for a variety of reasons, Youtube would never show a pre-roll on every single video view. For example, many ads are only targeted at people in the United States. Other times, YouTube won’t show a pre-roll to someone who just got one. A pre-roll that is viewed all the way through without skipping obviously pays much more. A pre-roll that advertises the next Iron Man movie pays more than a small banner ad for a domain name company…

So just how much money can you make off Youtube? If you’re one of Youtube’s biggest stars, you can make a ton! It’s a good deal for Youtube because these Partners are driving billions of video views and giving people to come back every day. Below is a list of the 25 highest earning Youtube stars. Their earnings may inspire you to quit your job and start making home movies! Also keep in mind these numbers don’t even include additional sources of revenue like merchandise, licensing, affiliate programs and sponsorships. These numbers are just how much these stars are making off their hundreds of millions of videos views…

What is the Deep or Dark Web?

What is the Dark Web?

The Dark Web is a term that refers specifically to a collection of websites that are publicly visible, but hide the IP addresses of the servers that run them. Thus they can be visited by any web user, but it is very difficult to work out who is behind the sites. And you cannot find these sites using search engines.

Almost all sites on the so-called Dark Web hide their identity using the Tor encryption tool. You may know Tor for its end-user-hiding properties. You can use Tor to hide your identity, and spoof your location. When a website is run through Tor it has much the same effect.

Indeed, it multiplies the effect. To visit a site on the Dark Web that is using Tor encryption, the web user needs to be using Tor. Just as the end user’s IP is bounced through several layers of encryption to appear to be at another IP address on the Tor network, so is that of the website. So there are several layers of magnitude more secrecy than the already secret act of using Tor to visit a website on the open internet – for both parties (See also: How to delete your Google location history).

Not all Dark Web sites use Tor. Some use similar services such as I2P – indeed the all new Silk Road Reloaded uses this service. But the principle remains the same. The visitor has to use the same encryption tool as the site and – crucially – know where to find the site, in order to type in the URL and visit.

Infamous examples of Dark Web sites include the Silk Road and its offspring. The Silk Road was (and maybe still is) a website for the buying and selling of recreational drugs. But there are legitimate uses for the Dark Web. People operating within closed, totalitarian societies can use the Dark Web to communicate with the outside world. And given recent revelations about US- and UK government snooping on web use, you may feel it is sensible to take your communication on to the Dark Web. (I’ll stick to Facebook, but I like the attention.) See also: What does Google know about me?

Dark Web or Deep Web? (Or Deepnet, Invisible Web, or Hidden Web?)

Although all of these terms tend to be used interchangeably, they don’t refer to exactly the same thing. An element of nuance is required. The ‘Deep Web’ refers to all web pages that search engines cannot find. Thus the ‘Deep Web’ includes the ‘Dark Web’, but also includes all user databases, webmail pages, registration-required web forums, and pages behind paywalls. There are huge numbers of such pages, and most exist for mundane reasons.

We have a staging version of all of our websites that is blocked from being indexed by search engines, so we can check stories before we set them live. Thus for every page publicly available on this website (and there are literally millions), there is another on the Deep Web. The content management system into which I am typing this article is on the Deep Web. So that is another page for every page that is on the live site. Meanwhile our work intranet is hidden from search engines, and requires a password. It has been live for nearly 20 years, so there are plenty of pages there.

Use an online bank account? The password-protected bits are on the Deep Web. And when you consider how many pages just one Gmail account will create, you understand the sheer size of the Deep Web.

This scale is why newspapers and mainstream news outlets regularly trott out scare stories about ’90 percent of the internet’ consisting of the Dark Web. They are confusing the generally dodgy Dark Web with the much bigger and generally more benign Deep Web. Mixung up the act of delibarately hiding things, with that of necessarily keeping pages away from search engines for  reasons of security or user experience. (See also:How to use torrent sites in UK: how to access The Pirate Bay, blocked torrents.)

Wait, what about the ‘Dark Internet’?

Confusingly, ‘Dark Internet’ is also a term sometimes used to describe further examples of networks, databases or even websites that cannot be reached over the internet. In this case either for technical reasons, or because the properties contain niche information that few people will want, or in some cases because the data is private.

A basic rule of thumb is that the phrases ‘Dark Web’ or ‘Deep Web’ are typically used by tabloid newspapers to refer to dangerous secret online worlds, the ‘Dark Internet’ is a boring place where scientists store raw data for research. The Deep Web is a catch-all term for all web pages that are not indexed for search, the others refer to specific things. (See also: Take precautions when using public Wi-Fi networks.)

How to access the Dark Web

Technically, this is not a difficult process. You simply need to install and use Tor. Go to http://www.torproject.org and download the Tor Browser Bundle, which contains all the required tools. Run the downloaded file, choose an extraction location, then open the folder and click Start Tor Browser. That’s it. The Vidalia Control Panel will automatically handle the randomised network setup and, when Tor is ready, the browser will open; just close it again to disconnect from the network.

Depending on what you intend to do on the Dark Web, some users recommend placing tape over your laptop’s webcam to prevent prying eyes watching you. A tinfoil hat is also an option.

The difficult thing is knowing where to look. There, reader, we leave you to your own devices and wish you good luck and safe surfing. And a warning before you go any further. Once you get into the Dark Web, you *will* be able to access those sites to which the tabloids refer. This means that you could be a click away from sites selling drugs and guns, and – frankly – even worse things.

Aggregation sites such as Reddit offer lists of links, as do several Wikis, including http://thehiddenwiki.org/  – a list that offers access to some very bad places. Have a quick look by all means, but please don’t take our linking to it as an endorsement.

Also, Dark Web sites do go down from time to time, due to their dark nature. But if you want good customer service, stay out of the dark!

And do heed our warning: this article is intended as a guide to what is the Dark Web – not an endorsement or encouragement for you to start behaving in illegal or immoral behaviour.

Lee Rigby revenge attack ‘like a horror movie’

An ex-soldier who stopped a neo-Nazi beheading a Flintshire shopper with a hammer and a machete says he is still haunted by the savage attack.

Zack Davies, 26, tried to kill dentist Dr Sarandev Bhambra, 25, in revenge for the murder of Fusilier Lee Rigby.

The racially motivated attack happened in Tesco in Mold in January, and earlier this month Davies was jailed for life for the attempted murder.

Mr Fuller said it was “like something out of a horror movie”.

“I will think about what happened for the rest of my life,” he said.

“That’s the image I still have in my head every night – him running towards me with the machete raised and dripping blood.

“It is like something out of a horror movie.”

Dr Sarandev Bhambra

Mr Fuller said he heard Davies shout “remember Lee Rigby”.

“Initially I just thought it was kids larking about but then as I moved about four paces I saw a man on the floor surrounded by blood and the guy standing over him and hitting with a hammer,” he said.

“I decided then that there was no way I was backing away.

“There was no-one else around me, they were all running and screaming, so I moved to one side to let Mr Bhambra run past and then I moved into the middle of the aisle and made myself as big as possible.

“I started shouting at the guy that what he was doing was madness and that I was ex-Forces. I made it clear that he was either going to have to go through me or he was going to stop.”

During the trial, Gareth Preston, senior prosecutor for the Crown Prosecution Service Wales, said: “Such was the level of violence involved that, were it not for the extremely courageous actions of ex-serviceman Peter Fuller, this offence could have become an act of murder.”

Mr Fuller has received an award for outstanding bravery from the Pride of Britain Awards.

With New Ad Features Tapping Gmail, YouTube and Mobile, a Step Closer to ‘One Google’

In recent years, the motto inside Mountain View has been “One Google” — a goal to achieve uniform experiences among its products for users and customers. Amid Kordestani, the outgoing business chief, mentioned this on the company’s last earnings call. At Code Conference in May, Kordestani described it as a “dashboard” for chief marketers, a comprehensive offering that ensures Google is “getting our advertisers to the right people.”

On Monday, the company’s ad business took two steps in that direction. At Advertising Week in New York, Google introduced new ad features that make use of its very broad reach across the Internet as it wages a heated battle with Facebook and others over digital spending.

The first, Customer Match, makes the most use to date of Google’s immense well of email users. Advertisers can upload customer Gmail addresses — “in a secure and privacy-safe way,” adds Google — and, for the first time, can deploy them in targeted campaigns along with search and YouTube.

Here’s how Sridhar Ramaswamy, Google’s SVP of ads and commerce, explained the feature in a press release: “Whether they’re searching on Google, checking promotions on Gmail, or watching videos on YouTube, we can deliver the most relevant information based on what they’re doing, wherever they are, when they’re looking, and on any device they’re using. Today, we’re building on these capabilities with new ads innovations to deliver even more relevance.”

The Wall Street Journal reported on the product’s arrival back in April. Facebook has offered a similar feature for advertisers since 2012, with targeted info based in email and phone numbers.

The second ad update is about apps. In May, Google unveiled “Universal App Campaigns,” a central portal for developers to manage the promotion of their apps across Google’s media channels. On Monday, Google opened the feature up more widely. Developers can now push apps within search, Google’s massive display ad network, Google Play and YouTube.

App ads have been a boon for Facebook. And Google has steadily trying to draw that spending, too, as it refines its mobile strategy. With both new products, Google is stressing, as it has lately, the ability to influence consumers when they are close to making a purchase — something that Facebook lacks.

For advertisers, both features will likely be welcomed. On the ads side, Google has tended to shy away from targeting capabilities well within its reach. (How many Gmail users thought their emails were already used to sell targeted ads? Many, probably.) But ad buyers love that type of precise targeting, and will pay for it. And unlike other ad targeting options that scrap info following a website visit, Google says it is only matching Gmail addresses that customers have given voluntarily to companies.

“Only Google can help you do this to delight your most loyal customers in the moments that truly matter,” Ramaswamy said.

Two teenagers held on suspicion of arson after London mosque fire

Two teenagers have been arrested on suspicion of arson after a fire engulfed part of a south London mosque said to be the largest in western Europe.

Seventy firefighters battled the blaze at at the Baitul Futuh mosque in Morden on Saturday afternoon, which London fire brigade said had hit admininstrative buildings and not the main prayer room.

One man was taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.

Two boys aged 14 and 16 have been arrested on suspicion of arson, and both remain in custody at a south London police station, Scotland Yard said on Sunday.

Crews from fire stations across south London responded to the fire, which was reported by a member of the public just after midday.

Pictures on social media showed a column of black smoke billowing up from the mosque. Half of the building’s ground floor was on fire, along with a quarter of its first floor and roof.

By mid-evening on Saturday, the fire had damaged 50% of the ground floor, according to LFB. Most of the damage occurred at the front of the building, while the prayer area of the mosque was unaffected.

Merton council leader Stephen Alambritis described the mosque as as “beautiful” and a “major landmark”. He said damage would be a “big blow” to the community, adding that the mosque was a very secure building which is manned by security staff.

Siobhain McDonagh, the Labour MP for Mitcham and Morden, spoke of her shock at news of the fire. “The mosque does a huge amount for the local community,” she said. “They are tireless raisers of funds for charity – their own charities’ funds and charities in the community.”

Police, ambulance services and 10 fire engines attended the scene and the A24 London Road was partially closed, causing traffic tailbacks. British Transport Police were at Morden South overground station, next to the mosque, where trains ran at reduced speed and passed through the station without stopping.

The vast Baitul Futuh mosque complex, which covers 21,000 sq m, was completed in 2003 at a cost of about £5.5m. It is said to be able to accommodate 10,000 worshippers

iPad Mini 4 review: A long wait makes for a potent upgrade

Fans of Apple’s smaller iPad Mini caught a tough break last fall when the company unveiled its new tablets for the year. Although Tim Cook & co. lavished plenty of attention on the faster, slimmed-down iPad Air 2, the upgraded iPad Mini 3 was regarded as a mere afterthought. The list of changes was so short, in fact, that some of us wondered why Apple would introduce a performance gap between the Air and Mini lines. Still more people wondered when they’d get a Mini with enough power to match its larger sibling. Turns out, the answer was “a year later.” I’ve been testing the new iPad Mini 4 for over a week now and can say with confidence this is the Mini we should’ve gotten last year.

Teens Among Four Killed In Quad Bike Crash

Two teenage girls and two men have died after a quad bike collided with a car.

Police said the vehicle collided with a bronze Nissan 350Z sports car on the A6201 between Upton and Hemsworth in West Yorkshire at about 12.30am on Sunday.

Investigators believe the Nissan had been travelling towards Hemsworth when it came into contact with the rear of the quad bike.

The girls, aged just 16 and 18, and a 20-year-old man on the quad bike were confirmed dead at the scene.

The crash happened on the A6201 between Upton and Hemsworth

A second 20-year-old man taken to hospital with critical injuries died later at Leeds General Infirmary. It was unclear if he had also been on the quad bike.

Two men in the Nissan have been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.

The pair, aged 21 and 22, are being questioned in police custody.

DCI Richard Holmes, who is leading the investigation, said: “Widespread investigations are continuing into what is a significant incident on the district’s roads which has now tragically now resulted in the loss of four lives.

“Painstaking investigative work is continuing at the scene and the road itself will not be re-opened until tomorrow.

“The victims are from the local area and are two men aged 20 and two females aged 18 and 16.

“Their families are currently being supported by specially trained officers and we are not in a position to release any further details of those who have lost their lives at this time.”

He added: “We continue to appeal for witnesses to the collision and would also like to speak to anyone who may have seen a unregistered quad bike driven on the roads around the Hemsworth area in the evening of 26 September 2015 and up to 00.30 on 27 September 2015.

“Similarly I would appeal for any witnesses who saw a bronze coloured Nissan 350Z driven in the Hemsworth area on the evening of 26 September 2015 and up to 00.30 on the 27 September 2015 to come forwards.

“Anyone who has information is asked to contact the Major Collision and Enquiry Team on 101.”

Investigators can’t make you give up your work phone’s passcode

American law enforcement might have free rein to make you unlock a phone using your fingerprint, but personal passcodes? Nope. A Pennsylvania-based federal judge has ruledthat the Securities and Exchange Commission can’t make two former Capital One employees hand over the passcodes for their old work-supplied smartphones to prove that they’re guilty of insider trading. While the US Constitution’s Fifth Amendment doesn’t protect people from self-incrimination using corporate records, both devices were locked with codes that only their owners knew. That’s personal information still covered by constitutional protections, according to the court.

The judge also didn’t buy the SEC’s attempt to lean on a Fifth Amendment exemption which allows searches when investigators know where evidence is. The Commission merely had a hunch that there might be proof of wrongdoing on the phones, the court found, not a clear connection indication that something was hidden. As it stands, there’s no way to show that the accused remember their passcodes — they could be lying, or they could simply have forgotten.

The ruling could set an important precedent in an era where many phones have a mixture of personal and professional data, especially those using office-friendly tech like Android for Work. The decision draws an effective line in the sand: just because you’re using a company-issued phone doesn’t mean that everything involving that phone is up for grabs. This won’t save you if your employer has the passcode on file, but it could prevent officials from obtaining data that isn’t actually relevant to a case.

Divine Guidance Sought For Saggy Trousers Ban

No butts about it – an Alabama councillor has been seeking divine guidance for a plan to ban saggy jeans, trousers and shorts.

Dadeville’s legal team is currently drafting the wording of the public dress code before it goes to a vote.

City Council member Frank Goodman told a council meeting “I prayed about this” reports the Alex City Outlook.

“I know that God would not go around with pants down.”

The much-vilified trend spread through hip-hop culture in the 1990s

The ordinance is currently being rewritten to include a ban on short skirts, so that it won’t just be men who fall foul of the fashion police.

“My concern is it should be for everybody,” council member Stephanie Kelley told the meeting, reports the Outlook.

“I think for the girls, with these shorts up so high looking like under garments and dresses so short, I don’t want us to be showing favouritism.”

Opa-Locka, Florida, and Wildwood, New Jersey, are among other communities that have banned low-slung clothing in recent years.

NASA to Announce Mars Mystery Solved

There is much speculation that the mystery to be addressed is the phenomena known as ‘recurring slope lineae’, the dark tendrils observed on the planet surface during warm seasons, which it is speculated is evidence of water.

Among those speaking at the briefing will be Alfred McEwen from the University of Arizona in Tucson, who in July published a study on slope activity in Mars’s Gale crater, and Lujendra Ojha, a PhD candidate from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta who has collaborated with McEwen and has also studied the possible water activity on Mars.

Science and technology website Inverse.com highlighted Ojha as “the odd-person out at the news conference”, pointing out that it was Ojha’s undergraduate research that helped identify the recurring slope lineae.

The existence of water would be significant as it would mean there was a prospect of life on Mars.

(Nature Geoscience has Embargoed Details until 11 a.m. EDT Sept. 28)

NASA will detail a major science finding from the agency’s ongoing exploration of Mars during a news briefing at 11:30 a.m. EDT on Monday, Sept. 28 at the James Webb Auditorium at NASA Headquarters in Washington. The event will be broadcast live on NASA Television and the agency’s website.

News conference participants will be:

·         Jim Green, director of planetary science at NASA Headquarters

·         Michael Meyer, lead scientist for the Mars Exploration Program at NASA Headquarters

·         Lujendra Ojha of the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta

·         Mary Beth Wilhelm of NASA’s Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, California and the Georgia Institute of Technology

·         Alfred McEwen, principal investigator for the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) at the University of Arizona in Tucson

A brief question-and-answer session will take place during the event with reporters on site and by phone. Members of the public also can ask questions during the briefing using #AskNASA.

To participate in the briefing by phone, reporters must email their name, media affiliation and telephone number to Steve Cole at stephen.e.cole@nasa.gov by 9 a.m. EDT on Monday.

Saudi Prince Accused Of LA Mansion Sex Attack

A Saudi prince has been arrested at a mansion near Beverly Hills after allegedly trying to force a worker to perform oral sex on him, say officials.

Los Angeles police say they were called to the property on Wednesday at a gated community in the Beverly Glen area after a report of a disturbance.

Saudi royal Majed Abdulaziz Al-Saud, 28, was arrested on suspicion of “forced oral copulation of an adult”.

He was freed on $300,000 (£197,000) bail on Thursday afternoon.

Police have said Al-Saud does not have diplomatic immunity from prosecution.

The royal, who was renting the $37m, 22,000 sq ft mansion, is due to appear in court next month.

Neighbour Tennyson Collins told the Los Angeles Times a resident saw a bloodied woman scream for help as she tried to climb over the property’s wall.

The US State Department and the Saudi Arabian embassy in Washington DC could not immediately be reached for comment.

Man Mauled By Bear After Shooting It In Face

A hunter has described the moment he felt the teeth of a bear sink into his head after he was attacked in Alaska.

Greg Matthews, from Plano in Texas, was hunting moose with his brother Roger at Skilak Lake when he stumbled on the female brown bear and her cubs.

The bear charged at him and he managed to hit it in the jaw with a single shot, but the animal still attacked.

Mr Matthews, 47, told CBS11 TV: “I knew at that point I was in trouble. The last thing you want to do is try to outrun a bear.

A library picture of a brown bear.

Mr Matthews said the female brown bear was with her cubs

“She hit me basically like an NFL football player. She just ran right over me.

“She went to bite my head again and then she picked me up by my back. And of course I was screaming.”

His brother heard his frantic shouts and ran over, shooting the bear multiple times before it ran off into woods.

Mr Matthews added: “My brother saved my life is the bottom line.”

Fishermen alerted Alaska State Troopers and Mr Matthews was flown to Central Peninsula Hospital in Soldotna with injuries to his head, back and right arm.

It is the third bear attack on the Kenai Peninsula in two months.

Investigators will try to establish if the bear needs to be euthanised if it was injured.

Obama Tells China President Hacking Must Stop

US President Barack Obama has bluntly told Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping during a joint press conference that cyber attacks must stop.

He said the two leaders had agreed that neither country’s government would conduct or support cyber theft of intellectual property.

Mr Obama said he expected Mr Xi to take the pact seriously and threatened sanctions if he doesn’t.

He told reporters he had raised “serious concerns” about growing cyber threats with Mr Xi.

“I indicated that it has to stop,” he said.

But he acknowledged Mr Xi had told him he cannot guarantee the conduct of all 1.3 billion people on Chinese soil.

Mr Xi agreed his country would not “knowingly support” cyber theft and promised to abide by “norms of behaviour” in cyberspace.

“Confrontation and friction are not the right choice for both sides,” the Chinese leader said.

If China reneges on the deal, Mr Obama said the US would also use law enforcement and other measures “to go after cyber criminals either retrospectively or prospectively”.

In their bilateral, Mr Obama said he had also raised concerns over human rights, advocating for freedom of the press and religion.

The US President said he had reiterated the right of all countries to have unimpeded commerce in the disputed South China Sea.

Mr Xi said China was committed to resolving peacefully any disputes in the region.

But he added: “Islands in the South China Sea since ancient times are China’s territory.

“We have the right to uphold our own territorial sovereignty and lawful and legitimate maritime rights and interests.”

He also reaffirmed Chinese support for the Iran nuclear deal.

And he said China would commit $3.1bn to help developing countries cut carbon emissions.

The US earlier pledged $3bn to a similar initiative through the United Nations.

The state visit is Mr Xi’s first to Washington since taking over as president in 2013 and the first by a Chinese head of state since 2011.

Republican outrage over cyber attacks had prompted calls to scale back the grandeur of Mr Xi’s visit, which includes a 21-gun salute and a glitzy black-tie dinner.

China has denied being behind cyber spying in the US and says that it, too, is a victim of such espionage.

As the two leaders met in the Oval Office, First Lady Michelle Obama took her Chinese counterpart, Madame Peng Liyuan, on a tour of a panda exhibit at Washington zoo.

Researchers create a “wormhole” that makes the magnetic field INVISIBLE

August 24th, 2015

  • This “device” is capable of making magnetic fields invisible
  • The device is able to produce an illusion that a magnetic field has literally “tunneled” through space

Several physicists, including Spanish scientist Jordi Prat-Camps have created, inside their laboratory a “wormhole” that is capable of making the magnetic field invisible through space.

It was Albert Einstein who first believed it possible

The idea of creating a “wormhole” comes for the great Albert Einstein. In 1935, Einstein and his colleague Nathan Rosen realized that the general theory of relativity allowed the existence of bridges that could link two different points in space-time. In theory, the Einstein-Rosen bridge, or wormhole could allow something travel “instantly” from great distances. According to Einstein and Rosen, these tunnels would be very small, making it “impossible” for a time traveler to fit through. So far, no one has found evidence that there really wormholes in spacetime.

The “wormhole” researchers managed created in the lab, isn’t a space-time”wormhole” but a realization of a futuristic ‘invisibility cloak’ proposed in 2007 in the journal Physical Review Letters. This wormhole hides electromagnetic waves from being viewed from the outside.

“This device can transmit the magnetic field from one point in space to another point, through a path that is magnetically invisible,” said study co-author Jordi Prat-Camps, a doctoral candidate in physics at the Autonomous University of Barcelona in Spain. “From a magnetic point of view, this device acts like a wormhole, as if the magnetic field was transferred through an extra special dimension.”

“From a magnetic point of view, you have the magnetic field from the magnet disappearing at one end of the wormhole and appearing again at the other end of the wormhole,” Prat told Livescience.

What scientists did was use magnetic metamaterials and metasurfaces which are specifically designed to have properties which are not found in nature, enabling them to create a working model of a “wormhole.” (Metamaterials are made from assemblies of several elements created with the use of metals or plastic. Their precise shape, geometry, size, orientation and arrangement gives them their properties.)

The inner cylinder of the device is made of ferromagnetic mu-metals. Ferromagnetic materials exhibit the strongest form of magnetism, while the mu-metals are highly permeable and are often used to shield electronic devices. A thin shell made of a high temperature superconducting material called yttrium oxide, of barium copper protected the inner cylinder, doubling the magnetic field that traveled through the interior.

The final shell was made of other mu-metals, but made out of 150 cut pieces which were perfectly placed to neutralize the bending of the magnetic field by the superconducting layer. The entire device was placed in a liquid nitrogen bath. Typically, the magnetic field lines radiate from a particular place and break down over time, but the presence of the magnetic field should be detectable from surrounding points. However, the new wormhole channels the magnetic field from one cylinder to another and making it “invisible” in transit, and appears to come  out of nowhere on the outlet side of the tube, according to a study published in Scientific Reports .

“The problem was make the device work with the necessary materials which need to be very light, which are very impractical and difficult to work with.” said Prat.

There’s no way to know if similar magnetic wormholes lurk in space, but the technology could have applications on Earth, added Prat.

See Ronda Rousey as Captain Marvel

During her recent Reddit AMA, UFC fighter Ronda Rousey was asked which superhero she would like to play if given the chance. Her choice? Miss Marvel/Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers.

Now, some amazing fan art shows us what the 28-year-old Rousey–who is basically already a superhero in the octagon–would look like as the character.

“Since the Reddit AMA I’ve received so many badass Ms. Marvel/Captain Marvel edits! There were so many cool ones I couldn’t pick just one to share,” she wrote on Instagram.

A Captain Marvel movie is currently scheduled for 2018, though Marvel has not yet announced who will play the lead role. Rousey could be quietly lobbying for the role (she does have some acting experience, after all, in movies like EntourageThe Expendables 3, and Fast & Furious 7), or just having a bit of fun.

Whatever the case, take a look at the fan art below and let us know what you think in the comments.

Teenage bodybuilder dies after his heart ‘burst

A teenage bodybuilder who wanted to become the new Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson died instantly when an artery burst in his chest, an inquest heard.

Andrej Gajdos, 19, collapsed outside a Tesco supermarket in his home town of  Weston-super-Mare when his thoracic aorta ruptured.

The Slovakian born teenager had worked out twice a day and used steroids to grow his enormous 7ft 2ins frame to 19 stone of lean muscle.

‘He was loved and known by many people, each with their own story to tell,’ his family wrote on a fundraising page that raised £4,000 to pay for his burial.

‘Andrej was a very keen bodybuilder with aspirations to become the new Rock… he will never reach that height now.’

Bodybuilder Andrej Gajdos, who was 7ft 2ins and weighed 19 stone, had a "history of bulking" and had traces of anabolic steroids and testosterone in his body when he died. The college student, who went to the gym twice a day, collapsed outside a Tesco branch on May 29 and died almost instantly. An inquest heard that Andrej had extraordinarily large organs which were enlarged by steroids, and that they may have put a strain on his heart muscles.

Gajdos’ drug abuse contributed to his enlarged heart – which was 50 per cent bigger than average.

Four different types of steroid were found at the apprentice programmer’s flat in Somerset and he had traces of the drug along with testosterone in his system.

‘Andrej’s heart weighed 680g, and a normal heart is between 400 and 500g. He wasn’t a normal man,’ Dr John Oxley, the consultant who carried out Andrej’s post-mortem, told Avon Coroner’s Court.

He added: ‘Steroids would have enlarged his heart, and having a big heart predisposes thoracic rupture.’

Dr Oxley said he could not be sure if Gajdos’ steroid use had been the direct cause of his death, or why he had such large organs.

The teenager had previously been diagnosed with lung problems including bronchiectasis and the inquest heard his GP also suspected he suffered with acromegaly, a disorder caused by excess production of growth hormones.

Recording a narrative verdict assistant coroner Dr Peter Harrowing said: ‘Such a tear is a very rare event, and the most likely cause is genetic. But I cannot record a verdict of natural causes.’

Dog plunged into £33,000 row over his frozen sperm

One look at this Bichon Frise show winning dog and you’ll want his sperm as well.

There’s also the small fact Beau Lemon’s frozen seed may be worth $24,000 (£15,700), which has led owner John Wangsness and breeder Vickie Halstead to fight over it in a Minnesota court.

The seven-year-old show dog’s sperm may have spiked in price after he received an untimely neutering in 2013, something Wangsness said made his wife Mary distraught before her death this year.

‘After hearing about the neutering, and I’m not overstating things at all, Mary literally cried and stayed in bed for three weeks. She never bounced back,’ he told the Star Tribune.

For the past year Wangsness has been seeking damages in excess of $50,000 (£33,000) and access to Beau’s golden sperm, which was apparently at a veterinary clinic, after accusing Halstead of neutering the dog as revenge for him trying to breed from it.

But Halstead denied the eight vials of sperm belonged to Beau, real name Victoire Gerie’s No Lemon Gemstone, and said they were his brothers, Beau Jangles.

Through her lawyer she added she felt it necessary to ‘rescue’ Beau from his owners because they had neglected him, and the dog wouldn’t have been able to have children anyway due to his ‘deteriorated health condition.’

Beau Lemon won a couple of all-breed best of shows and a gold-level grand championship during his heyday from 2011 and 2012.

He was second best show dog of his breed at one point.

It’s confirmed: Wearables are the ‘next big thing’

Wearables will become the world’s best-selling consumer electronics product after smartphones, according to new forecasts by market research firm Euromonitor.

Sales of autonomous wearables, or smart wearables, are projected to exceed 305 million units in 2020, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 55 percent during the next five years, Euromonitor said in a new report.

That’s well above other electronics like laptops and televisions but still below smartphones, which will maintain their dominance in the consumer market with sales projected to top 1.6 billion units in 2020, Euromonitor noted.

Two main categories make up the wearables market: Autonomous wearables, which include smartwatches and the Google Glass, and passive wearables, also known as basic wearables.

Read MoreLG just dropped a $1,200 23-karat gold smartwatch

The former group boasts built-in connectivity features and advanced processing capabilities that are capable of running third-party applications while the latter has a smaller range of functions. The majority of passive products today are fitness trackers like Fitbits that can only provide biometric data about users.

Improvements in technology and battery life as well the entry of the Apple Watch are among the top growth drivers for wearables, Karissa Chua, Euromonitor’s consumer electronics analyst told CNBC.

Apple is such a strong brand and known for their quality so it has become a major catalyst for the entire market.”

Moreover, the consistent growth rate of smartphones actually pushes up demand for wearables, she explained. “Demand is closely tied to smartphones as people essentially buy wearable products for an extension of the smartphone experience.”

The ascendency of wearable electronics also provides a much-needed boost to retailers and manufacturers as the dynamic growth of tablet sales comes to a grinding halt , Euromonitor added.

After logging a whopping 66 percent CAGR in the past five years, sales of tablets are set to slow to only 2 percent CAGR between now and 2020 due to consumer preferences for larger-screen smartphones.

Developed economies are set to be the biggest markets for wearables, with France and Japan expected to be the two biggest countries for autonomous wearables in 2020, whereas demand in Germany and China is forecast to be evenly split between autonomous and passive devices.

Read MoreSamsung launches smartwatch in Apple fightback

Emerging markets are unlikely to experience high demand for wearables since internet penetration rates aren’t as high and people in those countries are still making the transition to smartphones, Chua noted.

To be sure, Euromonitor’s forecasts are noticeably more bullish than other intelligence gathering firms like International Data Corporation (IDC). In a report last week, IDC bet global shipments will hit 173.4 million units by 2019, significantly below Euromonitor’s prediction of 305 million units in 2020

But IDC also warned of the growing gap between autonomous and passive units.

While smart wearables only account for about a third of the total market today, they are on track to surpass the less functional basic wearable category by 2018 thanks to advancements in user interface and features, explained Jitesh Ubrani, IDC’s senior research analyst.

“Smart wearables will quickly move from a smartphone accessory primarily focused on notifications to a more advanced wearable computer capable of doing more processing on its own.”

After years of delay, Mega founder Kim Dotcom faces extradition

Nearly four years after dozens of black-clad police rappelled into his New Zealand mansion and cut him from a safe room, flamboyant German tech entrepreneur and would-be hip-hop star Kim Dotcom may finally be about to face the music.

A New Zealand court hearing starting on Monday will determine whether Dotcom will face charges of copyright infringement, racketeering and money laundering in the United States related to the Megaupload file-sharing site he founded in 2005.

Well known for his hip-hop inspired photo shoots with scantily clad women and luxury cars, Dotcom had assets including computers, art works, a pink Cadillac and bank accounts holding millions of dollars frozen after the 2012 raid in the hills outside Auckland.

U.S. authorities say Dotcom and three co-accused Megaupload executives cost film studios and record companies more than $500 million and generated more than $175 million by encouraging paying users to store and share copyrighted material, such as movies and TV shows.

“The U.S. … took down the entire Megaupload site, went ahead and froze all their assets and did this with great publicity and public fanfare and did it in coordination with the very powerful force in the United States, from Hollywood,” Dotcom’s lawyer, Ira Rothken, told Reuters.

“We feel as though Kim Dotcom … will not have a fair procedural playing field because he won’t have any assets with which to mount a defence for the largest copyright case in history.”

Thumbing his nose at U.S. authorities, Dotcom set up a new cloud storage company call Mega after being bailed, but has since distanced himself from the business.

Monday’s hearing will be watched by developers like Dotcom working in the grey areas of the law prevalent at the Internet’s cutting edge for signs of how far Washington is willing to go to protect U.S. copyright holders, said Tom Pullar-Strecker, who covers technology for Fairfax Media in New Zealand.

“You just have to look at what the U.S. has achieved already through this action. Kim Dotcom’s business, Megaupload, has been destroyed really through simply taking the action,” he said. “It had an immediate chilling effect.”

Read MoreNetflix CEO: All TV will be Internet in 10-20 yrs

Megaupload accounted for about 4 percent of total traffic on the Internet in its heyday as users stored and shared files containing everything from wedding videos to Hollywood films.

Since his arrest, Dotcom, a German national and New Zealand resident, has been barred from leaving the country or venturing more than 80 km (50 miles) from his mansion, and is required to report to police twice a week.

The prosecution must prove that a crime was committed in both the United States and New Zealand in order to trigger an extradition treaty between the allies.

In an opinion submitted in support of Dotcom, Harvard law professor and copyright expert Lawrence Lessig argued that Washington’s case does not meet those requirements.

“An attempt has been made to extract facts from multiple sources and over a wide span of time, to organise a large number of otherwise disconnected facts by using systematic phraseology and to juxtapose phrases in order to create an impression of coherence and substance,” Lessig wrote.

“However, the attempt fails to reach its goals.”

A spokeswoman for the New Zealand Crown Law service declined to comment.

Apple Hacked

What it means is that Apple strictly controls what makes it into the App Store, vetting each app to make sure its security (among other features) is up to scratch.

It’s worked remarkably well so far.

Apple has sold more than 700 million iPhones to date, according to chief executive Tim Cook, yet the App Store has proven much more secure than the Android app ecosystem, because the latter doesn’t have a single quality control system.

So the news that the walled garden has a rather nasty infestation is important. Several Chinese apps were discovered to contain code that could steal user information.

Apple has removed them, but these weren’t knock-off stock or weather apps deliberately created to attack private information.

Google Maps Returns To Apple's iPhone

Apple is working to fix the App Store compromise

Instead, several blue chip apps were stealthily compromised.

WeChat, China’s answer to Whatsapp, was among them: it has around half a billion users.

Video: iOS App Store Hit By Malware

Tencent, which owns WeChat, said its initial investigation had not shown that any of its users’ information had been stolen.

Apple’s reputation for security will probably survive, even if the walls of its garden could maybe do with a lick of paint.

Given the number of iPhones Apple continues to shift, some sort of security breach was inevitable, and the Cupertino-based company has acted swiftly.

The fact that Chinese apps were infected is interesting for two reasons.

First, China is on track to become Apple’s biggest market: it sold more iPhones there than in the US, according to its latest results.

That makes iPhone users in China a bigger target, to criminals and perhaps others.

Secondly, this attack was more sophisticated than making a dodgy iPhone app, then hoping it makes it through the App Store (which has happened in isolated cases), and then that people download it.

Instead, they came up with a fake version of developer tool XCode, and tricked app developers into using it to build their apps. So the legitimate app developers were building apps from code that had already been compromised.

It’s very elegant attack, one that requires skill and resources. It’s also an approach the CIA considered, according to The Intercept, in a report based on documents supplied by Edward Snowden.

The Chinese government has long taken a keen interest in its citizens’ internet activities.

Identifying who’s behind a hack is incredibly difficult. But Apple’s success exposes it to some of the most motivated and best-funded hackers in the world, be they criminals or nation states, both in China and the rest of the world.

It might have to build those walls a little higher.

Addenbrooke’s Hospital Put In Special Measures

One of the country’s biggest and most prestigious NHS trusts has been deemed “inadequate” by inspectors and placed into special measures.

Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Addenbrooke’s Hospital, has been hampered by staff shortages while long-standing “serious” problems had been ignored, according to the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Inspectors were particularly concerned with the level of care in maternity.

High levels of nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas and used for pain relief in childbirth, were found in the Rosie Birth Centre.

This has been linked to dizziness as well as unconsciousness or death if there is a lack of oxygen.

CQC inspectors said senior managers had known about the problem for more than two years, yet they only advised staff to open windows where possible.

Equipment in the maternity unit was found to be old, while care guidelines were not always followed.

Across the entire trust, staff shortages meant there was not enough cover on wards,  including critical care, and employees were moved around to make up shortfalls.

This meant staff sometimes worked in areas where they lacked training, the CQC report said.

There was also a backlog of patients waiting for follow-up appointments, the inspectors found.

And the pressure on surgical services also meant routine operations were often cancelled and patients were waiting longer than the Government’s 18-week target for treatment.

The trust is already under scrutiny over its finances, running a deficit of £1.2m per week and set to be at least £64m in the red this year.

Several senior managers – including the trust’s chief executive and the chief finance officer of Addenbrooke’s Hospital – resigned ahead of the report being published.

CQC’s chief inspector of hospitals, Professor Sir Mike Richards, said patients had been “placed at risk” because some were looked after by staff who were not properly trained.

He added: “Staff were hard-working, passionate and caring throughout the trust, prepared to go the extra mile for patients, but having to swim upstream against the pressures they faced.”

David Wherrett, the trust’s interim chief executive, insisted patients remain in safe hands despite the damning findings.

“Patients are less likely to die here, be harmed, or catch a hospital-acquired infection than at almost any other trust in the country,” he said.

The CQC also put another trust, East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, in special measures, bringing the total number to 15.

In a statement Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust insisted it had taken other action to deal with nitrous oxide as well as advising staff to open windows.

It added: “We took action earlier this year to install an extraction system, but unfortunately this has not permanently solved the problem.

“We expect the situation to be resolved by December, but meanwhile, staff have been given guidance on minimising exposure and to raise any concerns they have.”

Ad Blockers Top The App Store

One of the better features in this week’s newly released version of Apple’s mobile operating system, iOS 9, is the ability for users to block ads on mobile websites, along with other content that can slow down browsing and eat away at mobile data plans. And while somewhat of a geekier feature to implement – users have to download apps then head into iOS’ “Settings” to enable their blocker of choice – it seems that new iOS 9 users are thrilled to have access to this added functionality. Only a day after the release of the updated software, ad blockers are topping the charts in the App Store.

Granted, none of the free ad-blocking utilities – like AdBlock Plus’s new ad-blocking mobile browser, for example, or the combination privacy-tracking app and ad blocker Ghostery – have been able to yet unseat any of the App Store’s top free apps like Snapchat, Messenger, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, or – sigh, Kylie Jenner’s new thing.

However, several of the ad-blocking apps are climbing the charts elsewhere on the App Store, including in the top Paid app lists and in the Utilities section.

For example, the Top Paid iOS app today is the new ad-blocker Peace, a $2.99 download from Instapaper founder Marco Arment. As he explained when announcing the app on Wednesday, Peace currently supports a number of exclusive features that aren’t found in other blockers yet. Most notably, it uses Ghostery’s more robust blocklist, which Arment licensed from the larger company by offering them a percentage of the app’s revenue.

Other ad blockers are also topping the paid app chart as of today, including the Purify Blocker (#3), Crystal (#6), Blockr (#12). (Ranks as of the time of writing.)

And in the top Utilities section of the App Store, these types of apps are found even higher up, with Peace, Crystal and Blockr filling out the top 3 positions in the top paid utilities chart.

Screen Shot 2015-09-17 at 1.08.25 PM

Although there are currently only a handful of blockers gaining enough downloads to become highly ranked, there are tons of these sorts of apps in development. We looked at a few of these (1Blocker, Blockr, Crystal) just ahead of iOS 9’s launch, and since then have heard from other ad blocker makers like Silentium (arrives soon), Adblock FastPurify, and Clearly, to name a few.

And there are many more still poised to arrive or launching now, like Adamant, Freedom, Hide and Seek, and Just Content.

It appears that the question for mobile consumers today isn’t really one of whether or not they want a blocker installed, but rather which one to choose?

At a high level, the blockers are fairly interchangeable – all will block ads and, typically, other content like tracking scripts when you surf with mobile Safari. However, some allow you to customize the blocking experience further – like by turning off or on particular types of content to block (social share widgets, videos, ads, fonts, comments, etc.). Others like you whitelist select sites or specify that you only want to block third-party cookies, as well as tweak other details.

The decision, then, is how much do you want to fiddle with your blocking settings? For those looking to just “set-it-and-forget it,” simpler utilities like Crystal or the newly launched Peace make more sense. For those who want to personalize their experience, many others offer a range of settings from simple toggle switches in the app to online dashboards where you can create complex rule statements.

IMG_2937

With the arrival of these apps, publishers and advertisers are fretting about the immediate impact to their bottom lines and business, which means they’ll likely soon try to find ways to sneak around the blockers. In that case, it should be interesting to see which of the apps will be able to maintain their high degree of ad blocking over time.

The best thing about the release of these apps is that it proves the App Store isn’t always the land of Idiocracy, like it sometimes seems. It’s good to see that a significant number of mobile consumers understand the benefit of these new utilities, despite their somewhat geeky nature and means of installation that involves fussing around with iOS’s settings. That’s a testament to how broken the mobile web has been to date, and how hungry people have been for a better browsing experience.

How to create your own Snapchat geofilter

snapchat geofilter fenwaypark
Credit: Lauren Brousell

If you use Snapchat you are probably familiar with applying geofilters to photos and videos. Geofilters are image overlays that indicate your location, which you add to a photo or video by swiping to the right.

snapchat fenway geofilter neighborhood

For example, if I’m standing in the Fenway neighborhood of Boston, I can take a photo and swipe right to reveal several interesting designs on the top or bottom of the screen indicating my location. Because Fenway is a popular, high-traffic area in Boston, there are several geofilters that pop up: Two different Fenway Park-inspired designs and one that says Boston with an image of the city’s skyline.

But what if you live in an area doesn’t have any geofilters yet or you want to add a new one to the mix? Here’s how to create your own.

First, make sure you have the capability to create a PNG file through programs such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator or other image-editing app. This is where Snapchat wants you to be creative. Come up with a geofilter design that represents a particular town, neighborhood, public venue or landmark.

Before you start your design, download one of the templates for Photoshop or Illustrator provided on Snapchat’s website. The PNG file must be saved as Web-optimized (i.e., save the file for the Web when you’re done) and transparent with a width of 1,080 pixels and a height of 1,920 pixels. The image size must be under 300KB. Leave some empty space, 149 pixels worth, above and below the image. Snapchat also recommends avoiding images that create borders around the entire screen. However, borders that cover a corner of the screen or one side are acceptable.

Snapchat

Snapchat offers guidelines for creating geofilters.

(Click for larger image.)

All designs must be approved by Snapchat and the company has some guidelines for making a successful geofilter. It recommends designing geofilters for places where people are likely to send Snapchats. The image must be original artwork, not a logo or existing photograph. Businesses are not eligible for user-created geofilters. Sponsored geofilters are generated through partnerships between businesses and Snapchat.

[ Related: Two Snapchat features you probably don’t know about ]

Once you’ve finished a design that fits those requirements, submit it through Snapchat’s website. This is where you’ll select the exact location that your geofilter represents and upload your image. Type your location into the search bar on the top of the map, then click and drag the lines to create a zone around a specific area, such as a street or portion of a neighborhood. This will indicate the area where the geofilter will show up for users. Then click on the upload image button on the right side of the screen and fill out the form below with your name, email and why the location is meaningful to you.

Then hit Submit. If you’re lucky (and creative) Snapchat will accept it and notify you via email and users will see it pop up at your favorite location.

Ronda Rousey and Floyd Mayweather finally fight (in ‘Street Fighter 4’)

Polygon reports:

YouTube user and game designer Richie Branson “played around with texture files” in the PC version of the game to create the Mayweather and Rousey characters, then took them through a little highlight reel of each fighter’s style and finally pitted the two against each other. Branson used CPU-controlled characters for the bout to keep things honest.

Who will be the next Floyd Mayweather? Four contenders

Who will be the next Floyd Mayweather? Four contenders

Floyd Mayweather insists he has retired at 49-0, leaving vacant the titles of pound-for-pound king and the next pay-per-view star in boxing. Fortunately, a successor can be decided right where it should be — in the ring — if all goes according to plan.

Mayweather, 38, presumably took his last bows as an active fighter with a unanimous decision over Andre Berto last

Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. It was an underwhelming production that according to reports drew about 450,000 pay-per-view buys compared to the record 4.6 million for Mayweather’s much-hyped fight with Manny Pacquiao in May.

Boxing is in need of a new headliner, a search that starts with two middleweight championship fights: Gennady Golovkin vs. David Lemieux at Madison Square Garden on Oct. 17 and Miguel Cotto vs. Saul Canelo Alvarez on Nov. 21 in Las Vegas. The two winners are mandated to meet early next year for the WBC middleweight title.

An optimist might suggest Golovkin, Lemieux, Cotto and Alvarez could be the modern-day version of Hagler, Leonard, Duran and Hearns.

That’s legendary stuff from an era that would be hard to duplicate. But the next two months will at least provide a new pound-for-pound king and perhaps a fresh start to a new era.

The front-runner is Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) of Kazakhstan, who owns the WBA Super and IBO middleweight titles. Expertly promoted by K2 Promotions and frequently featured by HBO, Golovkin’s popularity has skyrocketed enough in recent years to sell more than 15,000 tickets at MSG for his fight against Lemieux (34-2, 31 KOs), the heavy-handed IBF champion from Montreal. Golovkin’s debut as a pay-per-view attraction was perfectly timed for Mayweather’s retirement.

“Every step is bigger. Every step is better,” Golovkin said recently.

It will be interesting to see if the boxing public, which virtually ignored Mayweather’s bout with Berto, will spend PPV money to see Golovkin. The price for Mayweather-Berto was $74. Golovkin-Lemieux is being offered by HBO PPV for $49.95. Mayweather barely drew 350,000 buys when he made his pay-per-view debut against Arturo Gatti in 2005, so it’s hard to predict how well Golovkin-Lemieux will do.

“These fighters are getting ready to start their own legacy in the middleweight division, and what better place than The Mecca of Boxing?” said Bernard Hopkins, the former middleweight champion turned Golden Boy promoter.

The winner of Golovkin-Lemieux is certain to benefit from the exposure of a potential bout against the victor of Cotto-Canelo, which is set for Mandalay Bay and offered by HBO PPV.

Cotto-Alvarez is the mega-fight of the year next to Mayweather-Pacquiao and the latest chapter in the rivalry between Puerto Rico and Mexico. Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs), of Guadalajara, is the former WBC/WBA super welterweight champion. Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) has been rejuvenated working under trainer Freddie Roach and will be making the second defense of the WBC title he won from Sergio Martinez.
It also marks the first PPV collaboration between Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions, which backs Alvarez, and Jay-Z’s Roc Nation, Cotto’s promoter.

“That’s a red-hot fight with a lot of heat and intensity,” said a boxing insider. “The boxing world, if not the sporting world, will be focused on that fight. It should do really well.”

Jill Diamond of the World Boxing Council announced last month “the winner of Golovkin-Lemieux will be mandated to fight the winner of Cotto-Canelo.” That should give 2016 its first major bout. A loser’s bracket matchup wouldn’t be bad either.

And there’s this: Don’t be surprised if the winner between Cotto-Alverez becomes discussed as a potential opponent should Mayweather decide to return for a 50th fight.

Chris Brown being investigated for ASSAULT

hip-hop shootings lately chris brown

To say Chris Brown has had a troubled history with women would be to make light of the issue. Though the super star singer was welcomed with (mostly) open arms back into the inner circles of pop and R&B, the 2009 incident in which he brutally assaulted his then-girlfriend Rihanna is the subtext of all of his many legal troubles in the half-decade since. Now, Brown is faced with his most troublingly similar hurdle since. According to TMZ, Brown is a person of interest in a police into a woman’s claim that she was thrown off the “Loyal” singer’s tour bus in Colorado. Brown’s tour bus was reportedly parked outside the Platinum 84 Gentleman’s Club in Denver, where he had just shot a music video with French Montana and Fetty Wap.

The unnamed woman’s complaint–which is for 3rd degree assault–claims that when she balked at the bus’s no-cell-phone policy, she was physically thrown onto the curb, breaking her phone in the process. (It was not immediately clear if the woman was injured during the incident.) TMZ’s law enforcement sources tell the outlet that local police have surveillance video from the strip club that shows what went down. Authorities are seeking interviews with Brown and others present. Following his 2009 plea deal in the Rihanna case, the singer was sentenced to six months’ worth of community service and five years’ probation, as well as domestic violence counseling. He recently won shared custody of his daughter, Royalty. In other news, it seems that his history of violence toward women is keeping him out of New Zealand:

iOS 9 problems limited as 160 million said to download new iPhone update

Days after the update is released, 16 per cent of people have upgraded — and despite some slow downloads, Apple seems largely to have stemmed problems that have hit previous upgrades

More than 16 per cent of people have already upgraded to iOS 9 — leading to some reports of early problems with the software, but none of the difficulties that have plagued previous releases.

With around 1 billion iOS devices in the world, according to estimates, that means that 160 million upgraded to the software in its first day and a half, according to Mixpanel, an analytics company.

The huge number of people downloading the software did initially mean that updates were slow and were sometimes being thrown off by server problems. But days after the the new update was released, the download seemed to have sped up and was available within 10-15 minutes of requesting it.

There were some reports on Friday that issues were also hitting those who had managed to upgrade, particularly people with older devices. A Reuters report suggested that some users were being locked out of their phones and so had to reset them, losing information that hadn’t been backed up.

The issues seemed to be isolated and reports of lasting problems were minimal.

Those difficulties do seem to be fixed by resetting the phone. But Apple engineers were working to find a fix that didn’t lead to the loss of data, Reuters reported.

All users are recommended to fully backup their phones and their data before upgrading to the new operating system. While most upgrades seem to be going ahead without problems, backing up means that all information can be retrieved if phones need to be reset.

Last year’s iOS 8 upgrade was hit by many more problems than the new operating system. Many had difficulties installing it because of the huge amount of space that it required to install, for instance, and then the first version brought problems for some including difficulty connecting to WiFi.

Owners of iPhone’s tend to upgrade much quicker than competing systems like Android. Apple said on September 14, before the new update was released, that 87 per cent of devices were on iOS 8 — and only 2 per cent were on a version earlier than iOS 7.

Pranksters Built A Gay Bar On Vladimir Putin’s Holiday Island And He’s Not Very Happy About It

55fbfeedac2a1

Swedish hip-hop duo Far & Son have trolled the Russian President Vladimir Putin in fearless fashion.

In protest against Russia’s anti-gay laws, the pair built a replica of the Blue Oyster gay bar from the Police Academy films on the Finnish island of Åland last weekend.

The tongue-in-cheek pop-up bar, which was decorated with blue fairy lights and lettering, happened to be erected on a plot of land owned by the Russian presidency. Uh oh.

The pranksters posted pictures of scantily-clad men dressed in leather and yellow construction gear. Two of them are kissing.

They told Swedish paper Aftonbladet that there were ‘a lot of young people’ on the island who would be glad to have a place for ‘gay kisses, hand jobs and blow jobs’. They also said that they were hoping for a more dramatic retaliation from the Russian government.

We expected a bit more of a vigorous response from the Russians and that they would immediately send the Scud missiles into the gay bar, but it seems they can’t keep up with Far & Son. They are simply cowards Far & Son

Unsurprisingly, given that they are not exactly known for their self-depreciating sense of humour, the Russian authorities were pretty p*ssed off by the whole affair. Mikhail Zubov, the Russian consul to Åland, said the bar was ‘pure hooliganism’ when he reported it to the police.

The perpetrators forced their way into the area and built something, leaving their rubbish behind. This incident has been classed as trespassing, as well as some sanitation violations. Police have been in contact with the Russian consul and documented the crime scene. A source told The Guardian

Far & Son could face a three month prison sentence for their inspired creation, but that doesn’t seem to have put them off much.

I think someone will build this again with cement next year, then it will remain there forever. The Blue Oyster will be the only thing you can see from the moon, apart from the Great Wall of China. They will never take us alive. They added
